GENERAL INFORMATION

Austin USTA League Tennis is team-based play. Leagues are organized into divisions, Adult, Senior, and Mixed, comprised of teams with players in the same skill level (NTRP rating or combined rating levels). Teams compete to win weekly matches, and the team with the most match wins in a season advances to sectional playoffs if needed. Leagues are played through-out the year and is currently broken up into four “seasons”.

In a given match, players play individual singles or doubles matches (called “lines”) and the team that wins the most lines wins the match. A line match is usually 2 sets with a first-to-10-by-2 tiebreaker played to decide the winner if the sets are split (Coman tiebreak). Each team has a captain/player that organizes the team and sets the lineup for matches. Players must be 18 years of age or older to participate in adult league play. What is it?

USTA League is the country’s largest recreational tennis league, helping more than 900,000 participants nationwide get on the court, have a good time, and step up their game. The League is organized as competitive team match play. Teams are made up of a minimum of five to eight players depending upon division and league. Teams and matches are set up according to NTRP ratings, so your teammates and opponents will be at your skill level. The competition is exciting, the atmosphere is social, and since players compete on teams you have a built-in cheering section.

Who can play?

League play starts at the local level for players 18-and-over, and are largely organized according to the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) by age group. Top teams from local leagues earn the chance to compete in district and/or sectional championships, while the winners of sectionals advance to USTA League National Championships. League offerings can vary across the country. USTA sections may also offer other programs, which include combo leagues, grouping players of different NTRP levels in doubles; tri-level leagues, with three lines of different NTRP levels; and leagues just for those aged 18-39.
